As leaders, whether in ministry, business, or family, we all hit that point. You know, the one where the weight of it all just feels too much. The decisions, the responsibilities, the expectations, it’s overwhelming. And here’s the hard truth: we can’t do it alone. We were never meant to.
But here’s the good news: recognizing that you need help is the first step toward breaking free from that weight. Let me tell you something you might not have heard before: needing help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you’re ready to grow and lead more effectively.
The moment you can admit that, something powerful starts to happen. But here's the catch: help doesn’t always come the way you expect it to. It doesn’t always look like what you imagine, and it’s not always in the form you’re hoping for. But God is always faithful, and He knows how to deliver the right help at the right time.
Every leader, at some point, faces a challenge that their own strength can’t handle. It’s not about being a bad leader; it’s about acknowledging that we were never meant to carry the load alone. Think about it this way: remember trying to assemble something complicated, like furniture, by yourself? No matter how many times you read the instructions, you’re stuck. And then someone comes along, and suddenly, it all makes sense. That’s what it’s like when we learn to accept help.
Help Through People
Just like Moses had Aaron, God often sends help through others. It might be someone with a skill you lack or someone who can just listen. You might not expect them to be the solution, but they are. Don’t miss the help God places in your life because it doesn’t look like what you imagined.
Help Through Partnership
Sometimes, help isn’t just about getting a job done; it’s about perspective. When Moses learned to delegate, he allowed others to step in, and it changed everything. Working together means gaining wisdom from those who can see what you can’t.
Help Through Pressure
It’s not always the way we’d choose, but pressure can lead to clarity. When Elijah faced immense pressure under the juniper tree, it wasn’t failure; it was God preparing him for the next phase. So when you feel that pressure, stop and breathe. It’s an invitation to slow down and hear from God.
Help Through Prophetic Correction
Sometimes the hardest help to accept comes in the form of correction. But real growth happens when we listen to others who see things we don’t. Don’t dismiss feedback just because it’s uncomfortable. It’s a tool to get you back on track.
Help Through Provision & Strategy
Help isn’t always a direct handout. Sometimes, it’s a well-thought-out plan that brings the provision you need. Maybe you’re praying for more funds, but what if God’s calling you to develop a strategy that will unlock the resources you’ve been asking for?
Help Through Unqualified Individuals
God often uses people who don’t fit our idea of what help should look like. David’s mighty men weren’t perfect, but they were the help he needed to accomplish great things. Don’t overlook people just because they don’t have the credentials you expect. They might just be the ones God is using.
Help Through the Next Generation
Don’t forget that the next generation holds the key to the future. Just like Paul mentored Timothy, investing in young leaders will create a legacy that lasts long after you’re gone. Mentor them, believe in them, and pour into them because they are the future.
Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Why do we resist help?
Pride: We think we should have all the answers. But remember, calling is divine, but capacity is human. We’re not meant to do everything alone.
Control: We’re scared someone else might mess it up. But guess what? Sometimes things need to be done differently. And that’s okay.
Fear of Mistakes: Let’s be honest, delegating can be scary. But growth happens when we learn from mistakes. It’s better to take the risk and grow than to stay stuck.
Past Hurt: If you’ve been let down before, it’s hard to trust others. But don’t let past hurts dictate future blessings. Heal, and let the right help in.
Here’s how to make sure help works when it shows up:
Respond with Invitation: Don’t wait for help to knock. Invite it in.
Engage with Participation: When help arrives, be there with them. Walk alongside them to make sure the job gets done.
Offer Remuneration: Acknowledge the value of help. Whether through resources, meals, or recognition, let them know they matter.
Set Clear Expectations: Define what you need. Don’t expect others to read your mind.
Delegate Authority: Trust others with responsibility. Let them lead where they’re strong.
Your breakthrough is tied to the help you’re refusing to receive. Stop thinking you need to do it alone. God has already sent people and opportunities to help you, but you’ve got to open your eyes and your heart to them.
